Can I Merge Two Facebook Accounts
Merging Two Facebook Pages – or merging a profile and a page [updated 2021]
"I accidentally set up two pages for my business. Can I delete one of them? Or is there a better way to combine / merge the two pages into one?"
or
"My Business has a PROFILE and a PAGE on Facebook. Should I delete the Profile? Or should I delete the Page? Or what?"
There's good news! No need to delete the Profile, the Page, or the extra Page.
Facebook allows MERGING two business pages, as well as for converting a Profile to a Page (see our previous post: Changing my Facebook Personal Profile to a Page).
Read through to the bottom of this post for NEW 2021 info
that could be vital to this process for you!
In the first case above, merging the pages is the answer!
In the second case, the solution requires 2 steps. Step 1: migrating the PROFILE to a page. Step 2: merging the new page into the original page.
Merging Facebook Pages
When it comes to merging Facebook Pages, usually the smaller or less active Page merges INTO the other MAIN Page. Facebook keeps the custom URL of the MAIN Page (if applicable).
According to Facebook Help:
Merging Pages combines all your likes and check-ins, but all other content such as posts, photos and the username will be permanently deleted from the Page with fewer likes. Content on the Page with more likes will remain unchanged, except for the addition of likes and check-ins that were merged from the Page with fewer likes.
NOTE: It's important to restate here that ONE of the pages will be completely deleted – all posts, photos, videos, user engagements, etc., will be deleted when the page is merged into another page . So, it's important to be 100% sure you are comfortable with having all that content deleted. You can NOT get any of it back.
In our experience, users could previously choose WHICH of the Pages they wanted to KEEP. This seems to have changed recently. See below for new 2021 Facebook Page Merge info!
Also important to note: Page LIKES/Followers on the pages will be combined.
If you have 200 likes on Page 1, and 300 likes on Page 2, you will not likely have 500 likes on the new Page 1+2 merged page, as it is highly possible that some people already like both pages, so they won't be counted twice.
Before you Merge Pages
Visit the Facebook Help Centre (How do I merge my 2 Facebook pages?) to satisfy all of the conditions for merging your pages. You will be able to merge your pages if:
- You're an admin of both Pages.
- Your Pages have similar names and represent the same thing. (Exactly the same name is best.)
- Your Pages have the same street / shipping address, if they have physical locations.
If both pages don't have the same name, then the name of one of them will first need to be changed. (Instructions for changing the name can be found here: Names and Usernames – scroll down to "How do I change my Facebook page's name?")
The name change process can take some time, as it requires that users (LIKES) on the page be notified of the change. You won't be able to merge pages until the name change process is complete.
Update the other information, like address, category, etc., in the page settings so that both pages match relatively closely before the merging process begins.
How to Merge 2 Facebook Pages
Once the above conditions are satisfied, you can proceed with merging your Facebook pages.
To merge your Pages:
- Go to https://facebook.com/pages/merge.
- Select the 2 Pages you want to merge and click Continue.
- If you are unable to select your chosen Pages, it means that your Pages aren't eligible to be merged.
- Confirm your selected pages and which one you're going to keep.
- Click Request Merge.
You may receive an on-screen message right away saying that the "Page Merge request was successfully submitted" or something similar.
You may also receive an immediate on-screen message saying that the Page Merge was denied.
Facebook reviews Merge Requests, to be sure that the two Pages are similar and really do merit a merger. These requests take time, anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
If the merge request is approved, the pages will be merged and you may or may not receive notification of it. You will know that the pages have been merged because you won't be able to access or find the deleted (merged) page anymore. The remaining page that was merged into will show a new number of likes combined from both pages.
If your request is not approved, you may receive an email or other notification that the request has been denied. If you do NOT hear from Facebook at all, you can also assume that the request has been denied. Even if you receive the on-screen notification that the request was denied, is unlikely that any more information about why it was denied will be provided. (Facebook support is not the best about responding.)
When Pages Are Not Eligible to be Merged
In the event that the pages you wish to merge are not eligible to be merged, it could be because your page does not meet the initial conditions (for example, you do not have admin access to both pages, pages do not have similar names and/or addresses). Check the requirements and make the changes needed.
If the conditions appear to be met (that is, you are an admin on both pages, the page names are the same, the addresses are the same), there could be other reasons for ineligibility – violations on one or both pages, age of pages, etc… Contact us! We can help you figure out what the issue is, and if the pages can be merged after all.
Finally, in the highly unlikely event that two pages for the exact same business can not be merged for whatever reason, one of the pages will need to be deleted. Before the 'extra' page is deleted, users on the page should be informed of and encouraged to like the alternate page which will be kept. Also, as much content as possible should be collected from the page.
NEW Facebook Page Merge 2021 info:
While Facebook still appears to give you a choice of which page you'd like to keep, recently they will only APPROVE the merge request if the page with the MOST likes is chosen as the page to keep. This can cause a big issue if:
- you've converted a profile to a page, and the profile had more friends than the page you're trying to merge in to;
- the page you want to keep (usually the older, official, or more active page) has fewer likes than the 'other' page.
We've discovered some work arounds for this, so if this is YOUR situation, please get in touch!
Don't split your Facebook followers/likes and content because your Business has a Two Pages (or a profile and a page).
We have helped many businesses walk through the process of getting things 'right' with with their pages for Facebook!
If you need assistance with the process of migrating a profile to a page, or merging two business pages, please don't hesitate to contact us. (When you email us, please include links to your pages. If it's a simple question, you might consider buying us a coffee, too!)
When we provide support for pages, we will backup both pages before merging. We can also provide you with the content from the deleted page. Additionally, we can even update your new MAIN page with much of that content as well. (We cannot replicate user comments and interactions.)
If you have a PROFILE and a PAGE for your biz, we'll convert the profile first and then merge the pages, too!
If you found this information helpful, maybe you'd consider buying us a coffee!
